The wall of Messolonghi was designed by the engineer, Michalis Kokkinis after Mavrokordatos order and was built by the Free Besieged. The construction of the wall began March 7th, 1823 and was completed by the end of 1824. The original wall was much larger in length than the current one, and used to cover the entire north side of Messolonghi, connecting the city with the land.
In the heroic Exodus, the wall was almost entirely destroyed, and was rebuilt by king Otto, in 1838 in memory of the fallen. Today's Gate also features prominently and is located in the same place where the old one used to be. Outside the main gate, there is a sign which has the following written on it: Every Free Man is a Citizen of Messolonghi, reminding every visitor the heroic sacrifice of the Free Besieged.
The Byron Society of the Sacred City of Messolonghi was founded in 1991 and has turned into an international Centre for Research and Study of the life and work of Lord Byron. Among others, it aims to highlight the idea of Philhellenism along with the numerous philhellenes sacrificed during the 1821 Greek Revolution.
The Byron Society is housed in the same building where the great Romantic poet Lord Byron grew up. The latter, had developed important activities both in Greece and abroad, such as international conferences, lectures, tributes, musical and theatrical performances and exhibitions. Byron Society provides a rich library, with rare collections of books, open to the public

Panagiotis Palamas, the ancestor of the Palamanians was born in 1722 at a house of architectural distinction.
The same residence has been also the birthplace of our National poet Kostis Palamas, after he became an orphan in 1865 and went to the house of his father’s brother Dimitrios. Here, Kostis Palamas stayed until he completed his education and wrote his first poems. In the halls, corridors, and balcony conservatory of the house, one can find personal items, paintings, and documents from his life and great deeds.
The Museum of Trikoupis is housed in a mansion building, where the historian was born, raised and
lived. His son, a great modern politician and several times Prime Minister of our country, Charilaos Trikoupis grew up in the same residence as well. The house was built in 1840 by his uncles Char. Trikoupis, Apostolos and Themistoclis and is right across the house of Kostis Palamas.
The mansion is perhaps the oldest building in the city and is located near the lagoon. This house still retains its first architectural simplicity, having two floors with three balconies. The latter, was afterwards donated to the municipality of Messolonghi by MP K. Trikoupis and now operates as a museum where some personal belongings and photographs of the Trikoupi family are being exposed.
