Messolonghi first appeared in history after the Renaissance, inhabited around 1500, by fishermen and Dalmatian pirates. Historic documents mention that later on the area was called Mezzo Langhi by the Italians which means '' between the lakes ''. It was a fast-growing town and in the early 17th century it
begun commercial deals with the rest of Greece as long as overseas, owning 50 large ships, the first shipyard in the country and consulates in several European cities.
Messolonghi constitutes a historical municipality, given that two Sieges took place here together with the Heroic Sortie of Messolongi during the Greek Revolution of 1821.In 1937, due to the heroic stance of the people of Messolonghi, their sacrifice and their subsequent massacre by the Turkish-Egyptian forces, the city of Messolonghi received the honorary title of Hiera Polis (the Sacred City), unique among other Greek cities.

Messolonghi is the birthplace of five prime ministers of Greece (1788-1873 Spyridon Trikoupis, Zafirios or Zinovios Valvis 1800-1886, 1814-1892 Dimitrios Valvis, Epameinondas Deligeorgis, 1829-1879 and of the prominent figure of Charilaos Trikoupis 1832-1896), as well as of our national poet Kostis Palamas and distinguished writers as Miltiadis Malakasis, Antonis Travlantonis, Georgios Drosinis etc. Here, the celebrated English poet and Philhellene Lord Byron came to devote his talents and fortune to the Greek revolutionary cause - and here he left his last breath (died of fever) on April 19th, 1824.
