Agia Eleousa

agia_eleousa_2.jpg   Within seventeen km from Messolonghi and in the uniquely impressive landscape that shapes the officially proclaimed by the Ministry of Culture -"Monument of Nature"- canyon of Kleisoura, in a cavity of the rock at an altitude of 150 meters, one can find the monastery of Agia Eleousa. On the hillside, from a great distance you can discern a large cross of 16m.diameter which features prominently. Moreover, at that very point the Metropolitan of Etolia and Akarnania, Theoklitos, has been buried, after the desire of the late Bishop.

The Monastery of Agia Eleousa is a benchmark of the religious life of our county and celebrates on the first Friday after Easter and the first Sunday of June in memory of Yannis Gounaris, when hundreds of pilgrims come to kneel in front of the miraculous icon of the Virgin (Panagia).
