skyphoto   Messolonghi is the capital of the prefecture of Etoloakarnania and is located between the Acheloos and Evinos rivers and has a port on the Gulf of Patras. The enlarged municipality of Messolonghi, incuding the Municipalities of Etoliko and Oiniades, has approximately 40,000 inhabitants. The town is located 250 km NW of Athens and 510 km SW of Thessaloniki. Furthermore, Messolonghi is only 49 km far from Patras and 35 km from Agrinio.

   The first Siege of Messolonghi, dates back in October 25th, 1822, when Kioutachis and Omer Vryonis tried
to take it. Their first unsuccessful attempt to conquer the city ended two months later, December 31st, after a strong resistance from the residents towards the attacks of the Ottoman Empire which underwent significant losses.
   The second siege started on 15th April 1825 by Kioutachis whose army numbered 30,000 men and was later reinforced by another 10,000 men led by Ibrahim. The second one ended on April 10th, 1826, with the heroic Sortie of Messolonghi which was carried out in two phases.
